A friend of mine told me last week about having a really,
really hard time. And I said,
"Why didn’t you call me?"
The replied was, "I did. I reached out."
So, I pulled out my phone, scrolled up, and looked for the
message. Sure enough, it said:
"Hey, what are you doing? Want to come over?"
I’m like, "You mean this text? The one that sounds
like every other text you've ever sent me?"
I asked, "How was I supposed to know that was a cry
for help?"

My friend had read an article that said all human beings need just eight
minutes of time from a friend to feel less alone in a moment of stress or
need.
So, we came up with a code: the next time one of us really
needs the other, we’ll simply ask,
"Do you have eight minutes?"
Anyone can step out of a meeting for eight minutes. You
won’t solve your friend’s problems, but in those eight minutes, they’ll feel
like they can handle things better—because they won’t be dealing with it alone.
And that is the power of friendship!
